There are many reasons why I write science fiction romance, least of all the idea that I can predict what the future will be like. The question I often ask myself is “What if…?” Thinking about the future and what lies beyond our world has always been something I’ve done. I’m curious as to what technologies will develop in the lifetimes of my children and future grandchildren. Look how far technology has come in our own years on Earth. And, I want to know what else exists in our universe. What is life like on other planets? To me, it’s not a matter of if there is life, because I already believe there is. I want to know how different or similar they are to us.
Now, as with many genres, sci-fi romance can encompass so many types of stories. There are space operas, steampunk, alien romances, abduction stories, invasion stories, futuristic tales on Earth, dystopian romances, first contact stories, prison colonies, colonization stories, clone stories, artificial intelligence stories, time travel... The list goes on and on.
And the romance in these stories often varies depending on the author. Some are full of scientific facts and intense world building. While I do include all of that in my stories, mine are heavier on the romance, and tend to follow the plot of any romance story. For me, it’s all about love conquering all.
As for the heat level, this can also vary. I’ve read many young adult, new adult, and sweet sci-fi romances. I’ve also read some erotic and erotica stories that left me ready to jump my husband or any sexy alien that happened to be nearby. ;)
It’s all about finding the right balance. There is plenty of stories out there no matter what your tastes. So, why not give a sci-fi romance a try?
And if you’re wanting to write in this genre, go ahead! It’s a lot of fun. :)
