As we all head into a new year with a ton of goals to accomplish, it seems that I've done an obscene amount of thinking in what direction my own writing is going. I mean, we all have aspirations of hitting big right out of the park, but honestly, the percentage rate of how often that happens has to be under 5%.
The last few years have really put a dent into my writing time, killed some of my creativity and drained me to an extent. Now, here I am, early 2017 and ready to hop with two secret anthologies, and a few other indie titles later this year that I have yet to announce.
At this point I'm writing what I love which is historical, paranormal and contemporary. The contemporary project had been set aside for quite some time, but I'm ready to pull it out of the darkness and get back to work it. Now if only I can finish my two historical projects first. That said, my paranormal romances too, have sat in the sidelines waiting for the right opportunity. They were all written when I was a beginner writer, not to mention the market was unbelievably flooded with so many similar stories, and I didn't want to be categorized as fan fiction. Can you tell I've had lots of time to think about these projects? Now that sufficient time has passed, I'm stoked to get back to work on all of them. Rewrite them as needed and shape them into the beautiful and sexy stories they deserve to be.
It's rather amusing though, to see how much one's style and composition changes over the years. I've done quite a bit of reading on organizing, drafting and planning manuscripts to the point that it was the only subject I was reading instead of my ginormous TBR pile of paperbacks (romance, mysteries and non-fiction). Yes. I really do read non-fiction from time to time.
If you're new to romance writing I would highly recommend giving the following books, websites and workshops consideration. Publishing is a vast sea of networking, constant education and fluctuations in trends. You'd do well to have these tools under your belt before considering how to get published, or honing your craft.
I really wish I had known about all this stuff when I started back in 2009. If only we could roll back the clocks that far....
On that note, I have a manuscript to turn in on the 27th so I better get cracking. I hope everyone has a smashing year in accomplishing your goals for this year.
